There are three different types of reserves and sanctuaries around NewZealand:
Those run by people who want to preserve our dwindling wildlife.
Those run by people who want to make bank.
And those who are a bit of both.
Nothing wrong with making money, as long as it’s made with respect and care - not through exploitation ( There will be a name and shame page coming! )
Most rely on visitors to fund their facilities, so in isolated and off-beat places ( Places most suited to wildlife ), many sanctuaries and wildlife centers struggle to survive. Although there is Government funding and grants from various organisations, these sources are usually pretty stretched. It costs alot of money to keep a sanctuary running well. So think carefully about where you spend your money. It’s pretty much cleche to talk about money makers raking in profits whilst giving little in return. It’s cleche because it is common - every one wants a piece of nature. So take an interest in where you are and what you do - support the people who really care and work hard for our wildlife.
Here are a few places I’ve found with caring staff and good facilities. Check them out by clicking on the images to the right
