There are three different types of reserves and sanctuaries around NewZealand:

Those run by people who want to preserve our dwindling wildlife.

Those run by people who want to make bank.

And those who are a bit of both.

Most rely on visitors to fund their facilities. Although there is funding from the Government and grants from various organisations, these sources are usually pretty stretched. It costs alot of money to keep a sanctuary running well. So think carefully about where you spend your money. It’s cleche to talk about faceless corporate interests raking in profits and giving little in return. It’s cleche because it is common - every one wants a piece of nature. So take an interest in where you are and what you do - support the good guys.
